A positive student-teacher relationship appears to be a key factor in educational success, particularly during the early school years

A recent fascicle published by the Institut de la statistique du Québec as part of the Étude longitudinale du développement des enfants du Québec (ELDEQ) (Québec longitudinal study of child development) shows that certain aspects of the student-teacher relationship are associated with educational success in primary school. The study shows that even after gender, economic milieu and students' behaviour problems have been taken into account, a teacher's feelings of confidence and effectiveness and, to a lesser extent, his or her ability to understand what a child is feeling are positively correlated to student scholastic performance around 10 years of age.
